Southern California is bracing for a weather roller coaster this week as the National Weather Service (NWS) reports gusty Santa Ana winds will be tapering off today, only to be replaced by a stark change in conditions come mid-week. NWS Forecast Office San Diego confirmed that while the winds will reduce, temperatures are set to peak at 6 to 12 degrees above normal.
Despite a reprieve with more pleasant weather, the forecast from the NWS indicates that decidedly rougher times lie ahead. According to a statement obtained by the National Weather Service San Diego CA, a "substantial pattern change is in store for the middle and latter half of the upcoming week", with increasingly windy conditions being expected, coupled with cold and wet weather that's likely to continue into February. These conditions are reportedly uniform across ensemble guidance through Friday, forecasting heavy precipitation and potential snow with substantial confidence.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PST today covering several regions, including San Bernardino and Riverside County Valleys, the Inland Empire, and parts of Orange County. The NWS advisory mentions that residents can expect "East winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts 50 to 60 mph." Restrictions and caution are recommended, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles and outdoor arrangements that can be impacted by strong winds.
As the workweek progresses, the looming weather front strengthens its approach with the storm system expected to bring "strong winds over the maritime areas Thursday and Friday," per the same advisory. Boating conditions are likely to become hazardous as coping with the storm's conditions, mariners are advised to stay alert to updates, the probabilities of winds and seas reaching Small Craft Advisory levels hitting 90%, with a 40-50% chance of gale-force winds.
Community members and local agencies are advised to remain vigilant as the NWS continues to refine the timing and intensity of the expected conditions. Southern Californians are encouraged to stay tuned to the latest forecasts and updates as this dynamic weather scenario unfolds.
