Tragedy has once again struck Southwest Miami-Dade, as police discovered the body of a woman, later identified as 34-year-old Cassandra Davis, in an empty field in West Perrine on Friday. According to WSVN, police received reports of the body located at Southwest 174th Terrace and 103rd Avenue. Officials have commenced a death investigation after determining that the victim suffered from fatal trauma.
Detectives have yet to determine whether Davis, whose body was found covered with a yellow tarp, died before being left in the field or encountered harm on-site. Her identity was confirmed by her cousin Krystal Coppet in a statement obtained by NBC6. Relatives grieved the loss of Davis, who was reported to be pregnant and well-known in the area, despite having been homeless.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner is tasked with determining the precise cause and manner of Davis' death. Meanwhile, friends and residents of the community are seeking answers. Romania Dukes from the organization Mothers Fighting for Justice told WSVN, "She was loved by so many, and when I heard about it, it just tore my soul apart. I just ran to run over here and come find out, you know, put all the pieces together."
Local traffic was shut down as law enforcement officers scoured the scene for evidence. Coppet, visibly shaken, recalled her cousin to NBC6, saying, "She was a sweet person. I mean wouldn’t hurt a fly." Both the community's affection and her family's anguish underscore the urgent need for clarity surrounding the grim circumstances of Davis's demise.
