In a tragic turn of events in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, two boys, aged 8 and 6, have succumbed to injuries sustained after plunging through the ice on a local pond. The boys were rushed to the hospital in critical condition last Friday, only to pass away following a desperate rescue attempt, authorities confirmed.
The children were playing on a retention pond near South Thompson Road when the ice gave way beneath them at approximately 3:20 p.m., according to a statement obtained by the Wisconsin State Journal. First responders, comprising of Sun Prairie police and fire and EMS units, were dispatched to the scene. A dive team from the Madison Fire Department and a boat team from the Dane County Sheriff's Office also responded amid initial reports of additional children potentially at risk.
Police Lt. Ryan Cox of the Sun Prairie Police Department announced the first boy's death occurred over the weekend. Assistant Police Chief Shunta Boston later stated that the second boy's death was confirmed by the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office, as reported by NBC Chicago. The community and the boys' family members have been left mourning the profound loss of such young lives.
While the dive team carried out an exhaustive search out of an abundance of caution, they found no other victims. The names of the boys and details on the funerals have not been made public at the time of reporting. Further inquiries about the incident and the condition of the ice have been directed to the medical examiner's office, where messages seeking additional information on the autopsies remain unanswered.
