Chaos erupted in Miramar as a suspect, identified as 40-year-old Marques Johnson, was tased multiple times before he managed to steal and subsequently crash a police cruiser, authorities said. The ruckus began around 1:48 a.m. earlier today, when Miramar Police responded to a suspicious person violently banging on a resident's door in the 12000 block of Southwest 26th Street, as officials told NBC Miami.
According to police statements, upon their arrival, Johnson "rushed" at the officers "in an aggressive manner while making verbal threats." Officials recounted that despite deploying their stun guns several times to subdue the suspect, Johnson continued to resist arrest, eventually breaking free to quickly commandeering a police vehicle.
The stolen police cruiser didn't make it far, crashing into a gate and becoming immobilized. Scene footage displayed by The Miami Herald showed the heavy front-end damage to the police car and the ruined gate ensuing the suspect's erratic attempt to flee.
Police were able to apprehend Johnson post-crash and he was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital for an evaluation. Confirming the aftermath, officials stated that nobody, neither officers nor civilians, suffered injuries during the incident. Johnson now faces charges including resisting arrest without violence, leaving the scene of a crash, and grand theft of law-enforcement equipment.
