Two suspects involved in the fatal shooting of a Houston store clerk, a crime reportedly sparked by a stolen bag of chips, have turned themselves in to authorities. The Humble Police Department announced the pair surrendered Sunday night after an incident that left a 42-year-old gas station employee dead. This information comes per a report by FOX 26 Houston.
The confrontation began inside a Sunoco gas station near Bush Intercontinental Airport, when the two young Black males were seen shoplifting a bag of chips. Following a verbal altercation with the clerk about the theft, the suspects were then followed by the employee as they left the premises. The victim was shot after getting into his car to possibly keep his eye on the assailants, authorities said. Despite his attempt to escape by reversing his vehicle, he ended up fatally wounded in the median of the roadway. ABC 13 reported the man, who had been employed at the Sunoco for a matter of months, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An intensive manhunt followed, with K9 officers and police helicopters searching for the suspects, described as Black men between the ages of 18 and 25. ABC 13's coverage included an interview with a local man who frequented the gas station, who remembered the clerk as generous – the kind of person who would have helped the suspects had they asked for food. He said so often, the employees are happy to cover his coffee, and he knows if the suspects needed food, he would have helped them, according to the man's testimony to ABC 13.
Following their surrender, police are now to proceed with capital murder charges against the individuals responsible for taking the life of the gas station clerk over an issue as trivial as a bag of chips. While awaiting legal proceedings, the two suspects stand detained.
