A teenage boy is now conscious and able to speak after being shot in the parking lot of Miami Northwestern Senior High School, authorities reported, following a basketball game that ended in gunfire. The incident took place Thursday night and was recorded on a cellphone video, which has since circulated on social media. According to WSVN, the video showed a physical altercation that escalated, resulting in one teen standing, firing a weapon in the crowded area.
The victim, identified by students as a pupil from Miami Central Senior High School, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where he remains, but a family member confirmed that he's now responsive, this suffering multiple gunshot wounds that left him in a critical condition; meanwhile, officials have arrested another teen in connection with the shooting, though his name has not been disclosed due to his minor status. After the violent episode, an increased police presence was noted around the school, as shaken parents and students processed the shocking event—a student expressing to WSVN how the community's sense of safety had been punctured, “Really sad, it’s really disappointing, like, outside of school I hear everybody just chilling, having a fun time,” he said.
The shooting incident raised wider safety concerns, prompting officials to implement additional security measures at the school. NBC Miami reported that the shooting took place after a sporting event in the vicinity of Northwest 12th Avenue and 71st Street adjacent to the school, details that were corroborated by Miami-Dade County School Board officials.
Fear gripped parents in the aftermath, with one father telling NBC Miami about the difficult choice to remove his child from the school for the day, “He was like, ‘Daddy, come get me out of school, please," the father recounted, further emphasizing the preciousness of life, "Put the guns down because life is life, life is precious, You could be here today, gone tomorrow.” Officials also confirmed that a second shooting occurred nearby the same night, but was considered a separate incident from the shooting of the teen.
