The starting gun is cocked for the 20th iteration of Pat's Run in Tempe. This year, the event held in honor of Pat Tillman, the football-star-turned-soldier whose life was cut tragically short by friendly fire in Afghanistan, is hitting a big milestone. Sports enthusiasts and supporters of our troops can now register to participate in a race that stands for much more than just breaking a sweat.
According to ABC15, the run/walk spans a symbolic 4.2 miles, representing Tillman's jersey number at ASU. Those who aren't keen on shoulder-to-shoulder racing can also join virtually. Yes, you can indeed honor a legend from the solitude of your favorite running path.
Registration fees are pegged at $42, with a hike in price after Tuesday – consider that your two-minute warning. Kids have their very own dash for a mere $10, making it a family affair. "The race is expected to sell out so sign up early if you want to attend," says the informative folks over at ABC15.
But wait, there's more than just endorphins up for grabs here. Lacing up for Pat's Run, presented by TEKsystems, means supporting the Tillman Scholar Program. Courtesy of the Pat Tillman Foundation, funds raised empower military service members, veterans, and spouses with scholarships and leadership opportunities. "Team Tillman is a community of everyday athletes, civilian and military, who participate as a team at Pat’s Run and endurance events nationwide to fundraise for the Tillman Scholar Program," they rally, sounding the charge for all to make a difference.
The battleground of Arizona State University's streets will play host on April 13. For full details or to draft yourself into this mighty cause, march over to the Pat Tillman Foundation's website and secure your spot on the starting line of history.
