Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller described the incident as a hard landing rather than a crash, according to Arizona's Family, and confirmed that the two pilots on board were not hurt. The station, reporting from the scene, noted the helicopter was found upright despite being missing its main and tail rotors — a detail that speaks to just how violent the impact must have been even without anyone getting seriously injured.
The aircraft is registered to Dillon Flight Test Inc., a Scottsdale-based company, per the same station's reporting. Records reviewed by FFLs.com show the firm holds a Federal Firearms License in Phoenix as a manufacturer of destructive devices, work tied to flight-testing military armament systems — which helps explain why a company based in Scottsdale is flying an armed-variant military helicopter over open desert in the first place.
A Helicopter With a Long, Strange Service History
This particular airframe, tail number N480FT, has quite the resume. According to historical records compiled by Helis.com, the helicopter was built in 1970 for U.S. Army Aviation under a different serial number, later served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and was ultimately acquired by Dillon Flight Test in August 2007. Federal Aviation Administration records updated this month show it holds an Experimental airworthiness certificate under the Exhibition category, powered by a Rolls-Royce 250-C20C turboshaft engine, with its registration valid through May 2028.
The Bell OH-58 Kiowa line traces back to 1969, built on the civilian Bell 206 JetRanger platform, before the Army retired the type in 2020 — a move that sent many surplus airframes into private flight-testing or restricted-category civilian work, according to background compiled by Vertical Mag.
