Three men accused of the murder of Oakland police officer Tuan Le stood in court. They maintained their innocence with pleas of not guilty, stirring the courtroom on Thursday as they faced charges for what ended in a tragic loss for the law enforcement community.
Mark Sanders, 27, together with Allen Brown, 28, appeared in Alameda County Superior Court, looking to clear their names in the fatal shooting of the officer, as per CBS News San Francisco. Marquis Cooper, 34, the third suspect in the case, also entered a not guilty plea. Sanders is allegedly the gunman accused of firing the lethal shots, while Brown is believed to have been at the wheel of the getaway car.
A fourth individual, Sebron Russell, 30, faces charges separate from the murder, having also pleaded not guilty, but only to a burglary charge related to the incident, reported KTVU. According to the same source, Officer Le was killed on December 29 during an attempted burglary at a cannabis business along Oakland's Embarcadero, while he was on duty undercover.
The courtroom barred any video recording during the plea. Still, outside the courtroom, Russell's attorney expressed his intention to distance his client from the murder, claiming, "We would like to remove Mr. Russell from this narrative and we believe, the best way is a quick and speedy preliminary hearing," as noted by CBS News San Francisco. Each of the suspects, now part of a narrative of violence and loss, is held without bail except for Russell, who was released on a $275,000 bail.
In honor of the slain officer, a public memorial service was held last Wednesday, attended not only by Le's grieving family but also by hundreds of members from the Bay Area law enforcement agencies, coming together to salute one of their own fallen in the line of duty.
