Two men have been arrested in Columbia County following the recovery of a firefighter's stolen vehicle, which led to the discovery of illegal weapons, drugs, and animal neglect, authorities said. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office reported that on Sunday, at Fire Station #46 in Fort White, a firefighter's Ford pick-up truck was stolen while the crew was responding to a call. Deputies located the vehicle shortly after the theft and detained a man named Percell Brinson, 31, from Fort White.
Brinson was in possession of the stolen truck and indicated that the firearms and ammunition taken from the truck might be at a residence on Southwest Jasmine Street, as stated in a News4Jax report. Deputies carried out a search at the stated location where they uncovered approximately nine firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and 80 pounds of marijuana. In addition to the contraband, five severely neglected dogs were also found on the property and were subsequently taken into care by Animal Control.
The property owner, identified as Cortney Williams, 34, of Fort White, was arrested on several charges including weapons and drug offenses, as well as animal neglect. Brinson was charged with grand theft. "This case evolved very quickly and led to an extensive recovery of evidence," Sheriff Mark Hunter remarked. "The tremendous cooperation and proactive work among our Patrol and Detective Divisions resulted in the successful resolution of this case, and possibly many others, " Mainstreet Daily News quoted the sheriff as saying.
The investigation that began with a theft rapidly unraveled into a larger criminal probe. Sheriff Hunter suggested that the evidence collected might help resolve additional crimes, hinting at a possible network of illegal activity that extends beyond this isolated incident. According to WCJB, this rapid development underscores the effectiveness of the cooperation between the patrol and detective divisions within the sheriff's office. The efforts of Columbia County law enforcement have potentially averted further crimes by interrupting this chain of illegal possession and neglect.
