Gunfire broke out on a Chatham sidewalk, leaving two men wounded, one critically, in a bout of violence that struck Chicago's South Side over the weekend. The victims, aged 29 and 24, were targeted by an assailant in the 200 block of West 80th Street on Saturday evening, a place where residents once casually strolled, now punctuated by the echo of shots and sirens.
Authorities found the older man with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. First responders rushed him to St. Bernard Hospital, where he's fighting for his life in critical condition. The younger man suffered a gunshot wound to his left ankle and was transported to the same hospital, where his condition was stabilized, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The shooter remains unidentified and at large, casting a shadow over the neighborhood as detectives with Area Two are working to piece together the circumstances that led to the shooting. No arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains a grim mystery as officials comb through evidence and seek information from potential witnesses.
"An unknown gunman fired shots at 7:19 p.m.," as per a statement from the Chicago Police. Desperation climbs with the sun as the community grapples with another act of senseless violence, and families ponder the safety of their streets. Information on the incident or the whereabouts of the assailant, however, remains scarce. In the meantime, the authorities are urging anyone with knowledge of the crime to come forward, according to WGN-TV.
