Two Miami-Dade police officers were caught in a harrowing exchange of gunfire yesterday night after responding to a call about squatters at a southwest Miami-Dade residence, which resulted in both officers being shot and the armed suspect dead.
Local authorities reported that the incident took place around 10:40 p.m. at 22291 SW 162nd Avenue; as the officers made their move to approach the front door, a shotgun-toting man opened fire leading to the officers returning fire and during the shootout, one officer, age 35 with seven years of service, was hit in the arm while his 57-year-old colleague sustained injuries to the arm and face, both officers were rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson South by their comrades. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, as these events unfolded before the night gave way to quiet,” according to CBS News.
"This type of violence towards my officers will not be tolerated. By the grace of God, they are alive today," Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels firmly stated in the aftermath, expressing her deep relief that she didn't have to deliver the worst news to the families of the officers involved, as reported by Local 10 News. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also joined in, acknowledging the officers' bravery, "We owe them a great debt of gratitude. We are all grateful that they came out of this one alive."
In addition, a third officer, a 40-year-old female, was taken to the hospital for evaluation, details regarding the extent of her condition have yet to be disclosed, while the two officers who sustained gunfire injuries have their conditions closely monitored by medical experts, all while the community holds its breath for the men who stood on the precipice of death and duty.
