A pair of pedestrians were struck in a harrowing downtown hit-and-run incident, resulting in serious injuries and a subsequent police chase yesterday night. According to Fox San Antonio, the episode unfolded near Elm and Nolan streets, where a driver in control of a vehicle barreled into a man and woman before bolting from the scene.
Sending the victims to the hospital in the aftermath of the incident, the male suffered minor injuries, with the female left in critical condition. The driver, having crashed into a fence eventually after hitting the pedestrians, fled on foot, only to be apprehended by authorities. He was arrested blocks away, charged with intoxication assault and collision involving serious bodily injury, according to police.
Earlier reports by KENS 5 identified the victims as a homeless man and woman, simply occupying the sidewalk when tragedy struck as the black sedan came hurtling around the corner.
The San Antonio Police Department continues its investigation into the dire circumstances surrounding this case. As taken into custody, the suspect's identity has yet to be released pending further inquiry, reflecting the ongoing efforts to piece together earlier today wrought with chaos and descent into criminal flight.
