Tragedy struck Cicero as two women were gunned down inside their home Tuesday night, leaving a close-knit community in shock. Identified as 29-year-old Jessica Hughes and 19-year-old Myeshia Newby by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, these victims were rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital only to be pronounced dead, in what has been characterized as a "domestic-related isolated incident" by authorities. The ABC7 Chicago reports detailed the demise of these two souls caught in gunfire shortly before 7:45 p.m. on South 48th Court.
In what seems to be a chilling turn of events, a nearby park became the scene where a man, presumed to have taken his own life, was found at 8 a.m. the following Wednesday. The man, yet unidentified by officials, bore a self-inflicted wound, raising questions about his connection to the shooting from the night before. Cicero police were quick to respond, blocking off roads and deploying search dogs in a nocturnal hunt for answers, as shared by the Chicago Tribune.
Amidst the chaos and confusion, America Pantoja, a neighbor who claimed to know the family, recounted the harrowing moment when gunshots echoed through their street. "She was a good woman," Pantoja told ABC7 Chicago, referring to one of the victims. "She was dedicated to her daughter, her kids, her family." The sound of gunfire ensued by children and others running from the home for safety, seeking refuge in Pantoja’s residence.
An alleged argument is to have reportedly preceded the deadly shooting, a piece of the puzzle provided by a family member to Pantoja. As detectives continue to pull together the threads of this tragedy, the community is left to grapple with the loss of two of their own and a string of unanswered questions surrounding the events that unfolded in Cicero's quiet streets.
