An Uber driver was victimized by a trio of passengers in a robbery on Chicago's South Side. The incident took place shortly after 2:00 a.m. in the Chatham neighborhood, where the driver was assailed and dispossessed of his phone.
According to Chicago Tribune, the driver was forced, to hand over his phone and was subsequently struck in the face by the marauding passengers. After the incident, the driver managed to make it to the intersection of 27th and State Streets, which is where he contacted the police.
No suspect has been taken into custody at this point. CBS Chicago reported that the driver endured the assault in the vicinity of 78th Street and Lafayette Avenue and then drove himself to a location where he could safely report the crime to law enforcement.
The driver, having faced this violent ordeal, declined medical assistance at the scene. The robbery adds to a string of ride-share-related incidents that have raised concerns about driver safety in the city.
