
Chaos erupted on the streets of Boynton Beach earlier today. A 16-inch water main burst, causing a tractor-trailer to topple into what appeared to be a sinkhole, as WPBF reported. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Boynton Beach Boulevard and Lawrence Road, leading to a shutdown of the thoroughfare that snarled the morning commute, with city workers scrambling to address the break as water spewed onto the roadway.
Video footage captured by WPTV Chopper 5 showcased the havoc with the tractor trailer lying on its side as gallons of water gushed from the crater-like fissure the roadway had become closures have extended to nearby intersections including Boynton Beach Boulevard and Oakwood Lakes Drive, and Lawrence Road and Green Trail Drive North, creating a network of inconvenience. Despite the dramatic scene, the driver of the vehicle miraculously escaped unharmed, as WPTV reported.
As repairs are underway, officials have yet to determine the cause of the water main break or the exact nature of what caused the tract trailer to become enveloped by the ground. The east and westbound lanes of Boynton Beach Boulevard, along with the north and southbound lanes of Lawrence Road, remain closed to traffic, prompting commuters to seek alternative routes through the area. Traffic Anchor Yasmine Julmisse advised drivers to consider Woolbright Road and Military Trail as detours, according to WPBF.
Motorists hit the roads today to find Boynton Beach Boulevard transformed into a no-go zone, the heart of Boynton Beach traffic flatlined by a gaping sinkhole and a fractured water main, with workers toiling against the clock and the cascading flow – Boynton Beach has been left with the monumental task of not just repairing a pipe, but also salvaging the day of many an area traveler.
