San Antonio motorists are in for a frustrating weekend as major road closures due to construction works are set to gridlock travel on Loop 1604 and Interstate 10. According to a report by KENS 5, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) confirmed that the interchange of Loop 1604 and I-10 will be fully closed starting 9 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Monday morning, assuming the weather allows.
The closure marks the beginning of several weekends of disruptions resulting from the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. Made to start the installation of steel beams and the construction of ramps and bridges at the interchange, the closures will affect I-10 eastbound main lanes from UTSA Blvd to La Cantera Parkway, and Loop 1604 eastbound/westbound main lanes between Vance Jackson Rd and La Cantera Parkway, including frontage roads, KENS 5 reports.
Detour routes have been announced to help manage the flow of traffic during the shutdown. Westbound Loop 1604 travelers will be redirected to the westbound Interstate 10 access road, where they can use a U-turn at La Cantera Parkway. Eastbound 1604 vehicles are to take the Vance Jackson Road exit and make a U-turn at UTSA Boulevard to return to Loop 1604. Similarly, both eastbound and westbound I-10 traffic will utilize the respective frontage roads to bypass the closure.
Lending assistance through the construction chaos, law enforcement officers will be stationed to direct confused travelers. The closures, expected to span entire weekends, are essential for the progress on bridge construction within the burgeoning cityscape of San Antonio. Although the closures are rigorous, authorities have not revealed specific timing for future disruptions beyond the mentioned weekends, according to a news release obtained by KSAT.
Residents and through-travelers alike are advised to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time during the affected hours. Stay current with the latest traffic updates and plan alternate routes to navigate what is anticipated to be a snarl of weekend traffic in northwest San Antonio.
