West Palm Beach police spokesman Mike Jachles informed WPTV that the potentially dangerous object was discovered in close proximity to these roadways, its nature uncertain at the time.
Amid the unfolding scene, precautions were swiftly enacted. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office bomb squad, accompanied by their specialized robot, scrutinized the find while traffic was detoured and the nearby Walgreens was evacuated, according to WPTV. In an effort to dispel the dangers, roads such as Southern Boulevard eastbound at Lake Avenue were temporarily sealed off. It was not immediately clear if any homes also had to be cleared out.
The investigation centered on a potential explosive device located on the 4000 block of South Dixie Highway, prompting police to suspend traffic from Nottingham Road to Walton Boulevard, with additional closures on Southern Boulevard spanning from Lake to Olive avenues. The interruption to the usual flow of vehicles was palpable, with heavy congestion marking the streets for a time—the inertia of lives put on hold by the hand of caution.
However, the tension was relatively short-lived as the diligent work of the local authorities allowed life to resume its pace. By 12:55 p.m., the roads had reopened, as the West Palm Beach Police cleared the scene and lifted the veil of restrictions that had descended upon the area's arteries.
