Yesterday, a SWAT standoff erupted in Weston, Florida. Followed by deputy-involved gunfire and a vehicular crash. The drama unfolded within the confines of a suburban community, drawing a swift response from Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputies.
According to NBC6, the incident originated from a domestic situation in Hollywood, which directed law enforcement to a residence on Opal Creek Drive, where 48-year-old Valdemar Milto, reportedly barricaded himself with two children. He later exited and entered his vehicle. During the ensuing encounter, deputies discharged their weapons after Milto confronted them, armed. Despite being shot at, Milto managed to drive off, but only to eventually smash into a nearby tree.
Authorities confirmed that residents in the vicinity were temporarily prohibited from re-entering the neighborhood, where multiple gunshots were heard prior to the area's lockdown. The standoff, the shots, the chase, and finally the crash commandeered the community's attention for hours, leaving a shaken neighborhood grappling with the aftershocks of violence that seemed a world away from their doorsteps.
Meanwhile, Local 10 obtained cellphone footage capturing deputies in negotiation with Milto, who seemingly resisted cooperation, at one point even holding a gun to his head. Further reports revealed the suspect had rammed a BSO patrol car before fleeing, the sound of gunfire trailing his escape. The children involved in this distressing incident were found unharmed.
Milto was taken into custody following the crash, and he has been identified as a resident of Weston. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has taken charge of the investigation, and the two deputies who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative assignment as per BSO policy, pending further inquiry into the tumultuous events.
