In Florida City, a wheelchair-bound man was brutally attacked by two dogs, which led to the decision by officials to euthanize the canines involved, sources report. Pierre Massey, a 50-year-old homeless man, suffered serious injuries to his arms and legs last Wednesday when two dogs, identified as a pit bull and a mixed breed, violently mauled him after knocking him out of his wheelchair.
According to Local 10 News, Massey recounted the ordeal from his hospital bed and expressed his shock, “I still have flashbacks when I close my eyes sometimes, because it seemed like it would never be over, even a couple times when they did let go they came back again,” and he feared for his life during the attack, trying to protect his face and groin from the dogs' relentless bites. The dogs, named Boo-Boo and Jumpety, were reported by police to belong to a currently incarcerated man, with neighbors indicating that community members had been looking after the two dogs that managed to jump a fence and launch their attack.
Despite multiple cars stopping at the gruesome scene, Massey felt a sense of despair, "I was wondering if anyone was going to help. Cars were stopping but it seemed like nobody wanted to get out," he revealed in a local10 interview, feeling abandoned and ignored as he struggled on the ground. Miami-Dade County Animal Services took custody of the dogs following the attack, and per their investigation, one dog was euthanized on Monday while the other is scheduled for humane euthanasia on Tuesday, after being deemed a serious public safety concern due to the unprovoked nature of the assault.
Describing his survival as a "blessing", Massey is currently undergoing treatment, including skin grafts, at Jackson South Medical Center and faces a lengthy recovery process—he appreciates any assistance he can get, and a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover his medical costs.
