In a crackdown on drunk driving, the Town of Windsor Police Department nabbed four DUI suspects and handed out a slew of citations for driver's license infractions during a recent checkpoint operation. Law enforcement set up on Old Redwood Hwy north of Bluebird Drive from the evening of December 30th into the early hours, scrutinizing drivers in an effort to prevent alcohol-related tragedies on the road.
The checkpoint initiative led to a significant number of vehicles being screened, with 604 cars passing through the checkpoint and 22 drivers subjected to field sobriety tests showing diligence from Windsor PD in their enforcement of traffic safety and sobriety laws. Despite the rigorous enforcement efforts, most drivers were compliant and understood the importance of the DUI checkpoint with many appreciating the police department's mission to avert drunk driving.
According to a statement released on Facebook, Windsor's operation, supported by multiple law enforcement agencies, resulted in ten drivers being cited or arrested for driving without a license, and two additional motorists for operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license due to prior DUI infractions. One individual arrested for DUI also had a prior arrest warrant outstanding for the same offense.
The Windsor Police Department emphasizes the importance of planning ahead to avoid impaired driving; they call on the public to use sobriety designated drivers or ride-share services to keep the roads safe. Those caught driving drunk could face severe financial consequences, with fines and penalties ranging between $13,500 to $20,000 additionally facing the suspension of their driving privileges. The DUI checkpoint was made possible through funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, demonstrating the collaborative effort to enhance traffic safety in the community.
