In a dominating Sunday night game, the Winnipeg Jets soared to their 12th consecutive game netting points, decimating the Arizona Coyotes 6-2. The triumph on ice was chalked up to stellar performances by Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck, according to a report from ABC15.
The Jets, currently lauded as one of the NHL's top defensive teams, effectively put the clamps on the Coyotes, holding them to a paltry four shots until Nick Schmaltz managed to quickly slip one past midway through the second period. In a statement obtained by ABC15, Winnipeg's brick wall defense has allowed three goals or fewer in a franchise-record 29 straight games, thrusting them to the league lead with 56 points.
Not only did Scheifele shine with two goals, but Winnipeg's score sheet was peppered with contributions from Vladislav Namestnikov, Cole Perfetti, Adam Lowry, and Nikolaj Ehlers who all found the back of the net in the sixth consecutive win for the Jets. With a record of 10-0-2, this points streak is the team's longest since its first NHL season as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999-2000, as noted by AP News.
"They’re not just a good team, they play maybe the best hockey in the NHL. They’re really stingy and poised with the puck," Coyotes coach André Tourigny told AP News, acknowledging the formidable Jets squad. However, the Coyotes did show some signs of life with Dylan Guenther successfully scoring in the third period of his 2023-24 debut, and goaltender Karel Vejmelka made 29 stops despite the loss.
Up next for the teams – the Jets are set to quickly kick off a four-game homestand against Columbus on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Coyotes will aim to rebound from their three-game skid when they host Boston on the same evening.
