A tragic end came this weekend for a woman who was brutally assaulted on a Chicago CTA Red Line train earlier in the month. Vivian Morgan, 61, has succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent robbery that occurred on January 4th, according to officials.
Found unresponsive by CTA employees, Morgan was discovered sprawled across the seats of the train car near the Roosevelt station around 1:30 a.m. Despite efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 7:15 a.m. Saturday. An autopsy conducted on Sunday was described as inconclusive and is still pending further studies, the medical examiner disclosed, as ABC7 Chicago noted.
Mijawon Johnson, 36, has been charged in connection with the attack. Facing counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery, and misdemeanor violation of an order of protection, Johnson has been ordered detained by a Cook County judge. Court documents allege Johnson, alongside an unidentified second suspect, attempted to steal Morgan's bag. Johnson is accused of holding her head down on a seat while repeatedly punching and "stomping" on her, actions which tragically left her brain-dead, according to the documents obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Despite this incident, the Chicago police cite a decrease in crime on the CTA, with violent crime reportedly down 2% in 2023 when compared to 2022, and property crime has dropped 7%. The question as to whether charges against Johnson will be upgraded to reflect Morgan's death remains unanswered, with a spokesperson for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office not readily available for comment.
