A 55-year-old woman was hospitalized with a fractured pelvis after an SUV hit her in San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood, authorities said. The incident occurred on Saturday evening as the woman crossed an unmarked intersection at West Cedar and State Streets.
The pedestrian, whose name wasn't released, was walking southbound on State Street around 6:42 p.m. when she was struck by a 2003 GMC Yukon, driven by a 53-year-old man, according to FOX 5 San Diego. The driver had stopped at the stop sign but apparently failed to see the woman, authorities explained.
San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims stated, "He did not see the pedestrian and pulled forward and struck her," in a report by Times of San Diego. The injured pedestrian was promptly attended to by paramedics and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
While the investigation by the SDPD's Traffic Division is ongoing, preliminary findings suggest that alcohol was not a contributing factor in this unfortunate event, Heims added. The area, known for its bustling activity and popular restaurants, has been the site of pedestrian-related mishaps before, underscoring the tensions between urban growth and pedestrian safety. Anyone with information on the Little Italy collision is encouraged to step forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
