A deadly shooting erupted outside a Georgia State University off-campus housing complex Sunday afternoon, leaving a 21-year-old man dead on the pavement. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a clash between three individuals spiraled into gunfire near The Mix apartments on Piedmont Avenue NE, not far from John Wesley Dobbs Avenue NE.
Responding to the incident just after 12:30 p.m, Atlanta police located the young man who had sustained several gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene, as detailed by Atlanta News First. The Mix, while labeled as "student housing," also houses non-students within its walls.
The Atlanta Police Department's Homicide Unit is investigating the killing, with police confirming that the victim was not enrolled at Georgia State. At this time, law enforcement has not released his identity and are tight-lipped about any possible suspects or motives. They are hopeful that surveillance footage from the area will be instrumental in unravelling the events that led to the man's death. "We don't have to theorize what happened. We're able to view it," APD Homicide Commander Andrew Smith told FOX 5.
This marks the fourth shooting in the vicinity in just over a year, reflecting an alarming trend of violence in the area. The GSU community is still rattled by an earlier incident, where a 19-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries after a shooting on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue in October.
In an effort to reassure students and staff, GSU President Brian Blake has vowed to further secure the campus. "We have made recent enhancements that added more officer monitoring and cameras, reoriented our building entrances and provided staff training, and we will assess this incident to make more impactful changes," Blake stated in an announcement obtained by FOX 5. The university's actions include an off-duty officer stationed inside the adjacent RaceTrac gas station, who responded swiftly to the Sunday shootout, as mentioned by President Blake in a statement to Atlanta News First.
