A domestic dispute in Union County, Georgia, escalated into deadly violence on February 18th when an 85-year-old man was fatally shot by deputies, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Wendall Cross of Blairsville, GA lost his life in the confrontation that unfurled in his home on Wesley Mountain Road after Union County 911 fielded a call indicating a domestic dispute involving a firearm; responding deputies were met with resistance by Cross, who was reportedly armed and fired his gun toward them as they issued commands for him to disarm, the GBI revealed in a statement.
The deputies, who were not injured, returned fire hitting Cross, after which they attempted to provide medical assistance before Union County EMS transported the octogenarian to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the GBI said.
The GBI will continue to delve into the shooting, maintaining its role as an objective body to investigate incidents of this nature, and its findings will subsequently be reviewed by the Union County District Attorney's Office upon completion of the investigation.
