Arizona is reeling from the impact of a powerful winter storm that has brought both rain and heavy snowfall to different parts of the state, leading to road closures and school cancellations. The storm's onslaught began with rainfall overnight in the Valley, which persisted into Wednesday, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. Northern areas like Flagstaff faced substantial snow accumulation, which was still occurring on Wednesday, resulting in major highway shutdowns and impeding travel throughout the region.

The National Weather Service flagstaff highlighted on X the severity of the conditions, cautioning that "with numerous road closures and widespread snowfall for much of northern Arizona, travel will be dangerous to impossible this AM." They also indicated that travel conditions would remain poor for several days before improving by Sunday. Meanwhile, the Flagstaff Unified School District and Northern Arizona University have both responded to the hazardous weather by closing schools and canceling in-person classes, respectively, on Feb. 8.

As reported by AZ Family, Flagstaff accumulated over 16 inches of snow, prompting numerous road closures. Another storm looming on Thursday is expected to usher in additional rain to the Valley, with snowfall anticipated in the mountain regions. This has prompted a First Alert Weather Day for Thursday, signaling expectations of another challenging day for travelers.

The warning to those venturing into impacted areas is clear; the Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to never park along highways to play in the snow, noting that doing so is hazardous for a myriad of reasons, including the potential obstruction of emergency responders and the risk posed by snow plows. They also provided a comprehensive list of suggestions for essential items to take when traveling in winter conditions, such as warm clothing, drinking water, and a first-aid kit. Additionally, there's an anticipation of temporary reprieve from the stormy conditions with sunshine forecasted to return starting on Sunday, and to remain throughout the following week.

Citizens are urged to strictly adhere to safety protocols during such extreme weather events. This includes following evacuation orders, preparing for rapid waters on flooded roads, and ensuring readiness for severe thunderstorms with an emergency kit at hand, as advised by the American Red Cross.
