The resilience of the human spirit often reveals itself in times of adversity, and a young Arizona teen's response to life-altering news exemplifies just that. Fourteen-year-old Ethan Weiner was diagnosed with a brain tumor on October 1, 2023, spurring a journey that has led him to launch the "Have a Good Tude Dude" non-profit to support others fighting similar battles. Despite the initial fear and despair upon learning about his condition, which included a 5-centimeter tumor on his brain stem, Ethan chose to channel his passion for aviation into a force for good in his recovery and beyond, as FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
In the whirlwind of a diagnosis that would easily floor any person, let alone a teenager, Ethan managed to quickly firmly decide to stand and fight the disease. "The next morning, I woke up and I just realized it’s worth fighting," Ethan told FOX 10 Phoenix. This switch in perspective not only catalyzed his own recovery—twelve days after the diagnosis, Ethan's tumor was successfully removed—but also fueled his determination to give back to the community. Through his new non-profit, which has already raised about $4,000, Ethan is spreading the message of maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity, captured in the slogan "Have a Good Tude Dude."
The spirit of community activism extends beyond Ethan's work, as students in Scottsdale will demonstrate at the 22nd annual Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research (SSBTR) Cure-A-Thon. Set to take place at Saguaro High School on February 25, the Cure-A-Thon aims to educate young leaders about brain tumors while raising funds for research through nonprofits like Phoenix Children’s, Barrow Neurological Institute, and others. According to a statement by Phoenix Children's Foundation, attendees can expect opening ceremonies at noon followed by the chance to bid on over 200 silent auction items, with gates opening at 11:30 a.m.
Both Ethan's venture and the efforts of Saguaro High School students underscore a wider community response to a health crisis that can impact any individual indiscriminately. It’s a reminder that through support, education, and a can-do approach, those affected can continue to effectively move forward. As Ethan puts into words, "You have to Have a Good Tude Dude," he said. "It will be good in the long run. You just have to keep fighting every single day." In the face of adversity, while each individual's battle may be fought internally, the influence of a community unified by a cause can never be to be underestimated.
