An Arlington police officer shot and killed a man during a traffic stop on Interstate 20 Thursday afternoon. The unidentified driver, who was alone in a black Cadillac sedan, was reportedly driving erratically when he was pulled over. According to FOX 4 News, Arlington Police Sgt. Courtney White detailed that the driver was asked to turn off the vehicle and exit, which he refused to do.
The situation escalated quickly when the officer noticed the driver "was holding a firearm," White said. Despite commands to put down the gun, the driver failed to comply, forcing the officer to decisively fire several shots. The outcome was a shattered passenger-side window and a critical situation that unfolded on the busy thoroughfare. The aftermath took hours for police to completely process the scene, leaving commuters to contend with significant delays.
The nature of the weapon the driver possessed and whether he pointed or shot at the officer remains unclear at this time. However, as mentioned by NBC DFW, the officer involved was not injured during the confrontation. The driver, meanwhile, was transported to a local hospital soon after being shot and was pronounced dead there.
Arlington police have promised to release body camera footage from the involved officer early next week, which will hopefully shed further light on the tragic event. An internal affairs investigation is set to determine whether the officer followed department procedures, and a homicide investigation will look to fully understand the incident's dynamics. In the meantime, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is routine in such circumstances.
The identity of the deceased driver is still being withheld pending family notification by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. The release of additional details is expected to be forthcoming as investigations progress and as the promised body camera footage is made public.
