White's journey from starting her career as a life skills teacher at the Salt River Juvenile Detention Center to becoming a beloved math teacher and soccer coach has made a significant impact on her students' lives.
According to a 12News report, White, after initially working as a police officer, found her calling in teaching, having pursued it for over a decade. "Not only does she care about us for education, but she also cares about us personally," said Ethan Otto, White's student and a member of her soccer team. Despite White's unexpected transition from criminal justice to education, her students like Otto express a deep connection, seeing her almost as a family figure.
The demographics of Legacy Traditional School - Gilbert, where White teaches, reflect a diverse student body with a 50% minority enrollment and 5.5% of the students economically disadvantaged, as reported by US News. The school has 100% of its teachers licensed, asserting a stable and professional educational environment, with 80% of the staff having three or more years of experience.
Principal Julio Martinez highlighted White's unique teaching gifts. "She just is gifted," Martinez told 12News. Parent Brooke Kelly also praised White for going "above and beyond for her students," which has become evidently clear as students credit her for their straight A's and personal growth. The impact of White's teaching even stretches out to reach students eligible for reduced lunches, which comprises over 5% of the school, ensuring all have the opportunity to not just succeed but to excel.
The recognition of White as a 12News A+ Teacher coincides with the school's strong academic performance. Legacy Traditional School - Gilbert boasts that 65% of its elementary students and 67% of its middle school students scored at or above the proficient level for reading and math respectively, a testament to the high-quality education provided by teachers like White. The school district, on an aggregate level, manages its financials meticulously, spending approximately $6,463 per student annually and diligently focusing the majority of its resources, $3,643.6 million, on instruction.
To honor White's work, students, parents, and staff coordinated a surprise to present her with the A+ Teacher award during class. "You just teach them so well inside and outside the class," said Kelly in an emotional statement obtained by 12News.
