A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for gang-related murders, sealing the fates of three Athens, Georgia, men whose lives were claimed in a cycle of violence. Lesley Chappell Green, known on the streets as “Grip,” a high-ranking member of the Gangster Disciples, was handed down the life sentence on Feb. 20 by Chief U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia.

In August last year, a federal jury found Green guilty of a RICO conspiracy charge, marking a significant blow to the notorious street gang. "No sentence could ever ease to fully express the pain that Lesley Green inflicted on the families of the murder victims in this tragic case," said U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. The execution of this case displays the government's unwavering commitment to prosecute gang-affiliated crimes to the fullest extent of the law, Leary emphasized.

Reflecting on the outcome, Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Jerry Saulters remarked, "While this life sentence can never undo the loss of the affected family, it sends a message that justice will prevail." Saulters expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their perseverance and resolution that contributed to making the community safer, according to an interview.

Dispelling any doubt about the FBI's resolve, Robert Gibbs, Supervisory Senior Special Agent of FBI Atlanta Athens office, said, "The FBI is committed to reducing violent crime and combating the threat people like Lesley Green pose to our communities." He lauded the collaborative efforts of local, state, and federal partners to bring members of criminal organizations like the Gangster Disciples to justice.

Additional convictions have also rattled the gang's structure. Philmon Deshawn Chambers and Andrea Paige Browner await their sentencing scheduled for March 20. Both were convicted on similar RICO conspiracy and murder-related charges, with Chambers also facing firearms charges. They could each potentially receive a mandatory minimum life sentence for the VICAR-Murder offense.

As law enforcement continue dismantling the Gangster Disciples' network, two more gang members have already pleaded guilty and are slated for sentencing later in March. The chilling details of their crimes, including the calculated murders and cover-up efforts, unfurled in court, painting a grim portrait of gang violence and retribution. These sentencing outcomes signify another staunch effort under Project Safe Neighborhoods to curtail violent crime and reset the moral compass of communities once under the dark shadow of gang terror.
