Residents in Atlanta should prepare to whip out their umbrellas and raincoats as the city is set to experience a significant bout of rainy weather over the next several days. According to the National Weather Service, showers are expected to start today mainly between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., with a high temperature near 72 degrees. Winds are also predicted to pick up, with Southwest breezes 15 to 20 mph turning northwest later in the afternoon and gusts possibly reaching a blustery 40 mph.
Tonight, Atlantans might to get experience a short respite with only a 30 percent chance of showers before 7 p.m., followed by partly cloudy skies and a low around 35 degrees. The bracing northwest winds are expected to diminish slightly to 10 to 15 mph after midnight, yet gusts could still approach 40 mph. Thursday then brings mostly sunny conditions with a pleasant high near 58 degrees, with a calm north wind gently shifting east in the afternoon.
However, by Thursday night, the chance of showers climbs back up to 40 percent after 1 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 42 degrees. Observers note that these April showers, though not unfamiliar to the season, may temper any burgeoning spring cheer with an east wind stirring 5 to 10 mph, and gusts up to 20 mph. Come Friday, rain is almost a certainty, with a forecasted 90 percent chance of showers and a noticeably cooler high near 49 degrees, accompanied by an east wind around 15 mph and possible gusts up to 20 mph.
The National Weather Service outlines that this wet pattern is likely to persist into the weekend with a 30 percent chance of showers by Saturday and a high of about 62 degrees. By evening, the possibility of showers lingers, complementing the mostly cloudy night skies and a low around 52 degrees. The following days leading into early next week also have Atlantans bracing for sporadic showers with moisture continuing to team with the clouds, reflecting a persistent pattern that suggests umbrellas will not soon return to closets.
