The heat is on in Atlanta as local and federal agents investigate an arson attack, which saw an Atlanta Police Department cruiser set ablaze in front of an officer's home early Saturday morning. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum is taking the torching personally, promising swift action against the culprits during a recent meeting with the Atlanta City Council's Public Safety Committee. "On Saturday, we had a group that has expressed their opposition to the public safety training center to set fire to one of these vehicles," Schierbaum said, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The incendiary act not only torched the $80,000 vehicle but also inflamed tensions within the community, with the chief attributing the crime to protesters against the controversial $91-million Atlanta Public Safety Training Facility, the vehicle's destruction is seen as a direct blow to the community "That is an $80,000 price tag right back to the citizens of Atlanta, Georgia," Schierbaum pointed out in the same meeting, emphasizing the financial strain and sense of insecurity the arson imposes on local taxpayers and residents.
Evidence gathered, thanks to public submissions of video footage, led to a search warrant being executed at a home along Harper Road SE by the Atlanta Police Apex Unit in collaboration with agencies including the ATF, FBI, GBI, and the State of Georgia Arson Control Board, according to a report by 11Alive. Schierbaum divulged this development stating, "We are very familiar with one person of interest we believe may be involved with in this case."
During his briefing to the council's committee, Schierbaum laid bare his strategy to deter future threats and dismantle fear cultivated by arson attacks, remarking, "We have places you stand to let your voice be heard if you are opposed to something when you want your elected officials to reconsider something or be heard," signaling that while dissent is expected to be passionate it should never blaze out of the bounds of law and order. The chief also vowed, "The city will not allow police officers or citizens to be held hostage by fear and intimidation and vowed an arrest would be made," as per FOX 5 Atlanta.
