The Atlanta Police Department is currently on the hunt for two individuals believed to be arsonists involved in the torching of a patrol car early yesterday morning, as announced by Police Chief Darin Schierbaum during a press conference. The vehicle was found ablaze in the 300 block of Greendale Drive around 4 a.m. The chief stated that the group known as "Defend the Atlanta Forest" or "Stop Cop City" has claimed responsibility for the act, according to a briefing obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The Atlanta law enforcement is working diligently to not allow the city be held hostage by fear, as the recent arson represents a tactic of intimidation, Chief Schierbaum emphasized. "What does it mean to the citizens of Atlanta? That’s $80,000 of your taxpayer dollars that will be used to replace that vehicle," Schierbaum explained, expressing the monetary implications for the community, in an interview reported by WSB-TV.
Earlier in the week, 30-year-old John Robert Mazurek was arrested and charged with first-degree arson in connection to a series of similar incidents. While the police have yet to locate the arsonists responsible for the recent patrol car fire, information gathered led them to execute a search warrant at a residence on Harper Road SE. Yet, the person of interest is still at large and wanted for questioning.
Schierbaum praised the collaborative efforts of the FBI, the ATF, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. "I want to note a couple of things here. We are not going to allow, as a police department or law enforcement community, for this city to be held hostage to fear and intimidation from fire," Schierbaum staunchly informed the public and media, as aired by WSB-TV. He further stated that the investigation and the efforts to bring the arsonists to justice won't rest until those responsible are apprehended.
With this recent arson attack marking another in a series over the past two years linked to the opposition of the construction of a new training facility for public safety, the Atlanta police chief's message underscored the determination of the department to uphold safety and order in the face of such incidents. While the community has felt the repercussions, the police remain persistent in their pursuit of the culprits, with the expectation of additional arrests as the investigation continues.
