Austin FC is tapping into the rich musical heritage of its hometown and stitching it directly into its brand. It's kicking off a tribute to the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters with its "Armadillo Kit," a new secondary jersey that the team will sport for the 2024 and 2025 Major League Soccer seasons. This homage celebrates the ethos and history of a venue that once hosted music icons like Willie Nelson and Ray Charles, and in a city known as the "live music capital of the world," such nods do not go unnoticed.
The jersey colorway features a cream base and a vintage shade of green, designed to reminisce the vintage posters that once papered the revered venue's walls. What's a tribute without a little hidden flair, of course? An armadillo graphic is sneakily placed at the bottom of the jersey, only visible when players opt to sport it untucked. Proudly showcasing the original address of the venue, "525 1/2 Barton Springs Road," the kit pays homage to the past while players get to quickly represent it out on the pitch. According to a KXAN report, the jersey also replaces the mint green "Sentimiento" kit used in previous seasons.
Andy Loughnane, president of Austin FC, reinforced the team's cultural mission in remarks obtained by Rolling Stone, expressing it's an "honor to show our respect for the venue, the people who built it, and the musicians who played there." He underlined that the camaraderie and community once celebrated at the Armadillo World Headquarters are still alive in Austin and are echoed in the energy of the Q2 Stadium during match days.
Actor and Austin FC investor Matthew McConaughey, attuned to the city's inclusive and spirited mélange, can't help but relish the convergence of sports, music, and culture. "Come as you are," he calls it in a Rolling Stone interview, reflecting on the eclectic mix of people drawn together by Armadillo in the past. Whether it's tracking down a wordsmith musician like James McMurtry, or getting to possibly share a beer with other fans while clad in the "Armadillo Kit," McConaughey portrays a community united, in essence, by the familiar strains of the city's shared tunes and the collective beat of soccer fans' hearts.
The club officially rolled out the Adidas-manufactured kit at a launch event at ACL Live, with performances by local musicians setting the stage. Despite earlier leaks from the video game EA FC24 and whispers of appearances at local Adidas outlets, the kit now stands officially released, ready to be donned by fans eager to partake in the revelry of Austin's rich cultural tapestry every game day.
