A 17-year-old male, already under the eye of law enforcement with a GPS ankle bracelet, was apprehended in Springfield, Massachusetts while loaded for bear. Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) officers, directed by Sgt. David Robillard, seized a loaded machine gun equipped with a device to quickly turn it fully automatic, as well as a 50-round drum magazine from the juvenile on Friday evening.
Working on a tip-off about the juvenile's illegal firearm possession, the detectives managed to pinpoint the suspect's location in a vehicle at the intersection of Montpelier & Niagara Streets. The stop resulted in the discovery of the firearm inside the car, and swiftly, the juvenile was taken into custody. However, the two other individuals in the car were released after the traffic stop.
According to details reported by the Springfield Police Department, the seized weapon was modified with a sear-selector switch, commonly known as a Glock switch, which can convert a semi-automatic firearm into an automatic one. The firearm was loaded with 32 rounds, and the accompanying drum magazine contained an additional 17 rounds.
Reflective of his minor status, the name and additional details regarding the underage suspect have been withheld, consistent with youth privacy laws.
