The blaze, which ignited on the night of February 14, led to the destruction of two buildings and damage to others amidst the brick-lined charm of this community. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the Bisbee Oil & Vinegar store and the Many Fine Things Gallery were the main casualties, with bricks from these century-old structures tumbling into the streets.
No injuries were reported from the incident that shook residents on what was supposed to be a holiday weekend brimming with activity. The fire subsided without harming any people, but it left behind a roadmap for recovery that local businesses and officials must now navigate. "This is more like losing part of your family," Bisbee Mayor Ken Budge told FOX 10 Phoenix, expressing the sentiment of a community that prides itself on tight-knit connections.
Café Roka, another local establishment owned by Rod Kass and his wife, who have deep roots in Bisbee, became a beacon of camaraderie amidst the turmoil. Kass opened his doors to feed the firefighters, reflecting a spirit of mutual aid that seems inherent to Bisbee's residents. "I just went out and said 'hey! have you guys had any access to any food?' and they hadn’t," Kass related in an interview obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
