The film's success was a stark contrast to Sony's "Madame Web," which became one of the lowest debuts for a Marvel character-centric movie, struggling to weave a mere $15.2 million over President’s Day weekend, , according to KENS5.
Both films had set their sights on Valentine's Day audiences, launching on Tuesday in hopes of attracting couples and fans. However, it was "One Love," led by Kingsley Ben-Adir and backed by the Marley estate, that resonated with audiences spanning generations, particularly capturing the hearts of younger viewers. "Our highest quadrant was (age) 18 to 24. A third of the audience was under 25. That, to me, speaks volumes," Paramount's distribution chief Chris Aronson highlighted in a statement reported by KBTX.
While the Ziggy Marley-produced "One Love" may have only scored a 43% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience response significantly differed, awarding the film an "A" CinemaScore. This audience enthusiasm is expected to bolster the film's theatrical life beyond its impressive opening. Meanwhile, "Madame Web," with a meager 13% "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes and a "C+" CinemaScore, suggests that web-slinging spinoffs are not always a hit. "The entire superhero genre has had a really rough go of it over the past year," Comscore's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian explained, pointing out an industry trend away from guaranteed superhero success. Despite this shortcoming, Sony found solace in their other Spider-Verse offering, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," which garnered acclaim at the Annie Awards, as reported by KBTX.
