The heartrending search for 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham ended in tragedy, as the Polk County Sheriff's Office confirmed that her body was found in the Trinity River near US-59. Polk County Sheriff Byron Lyons expressed profound sorrow, saying, "My heart aches with this news and I express with my deepest sympathy and condolences to everyone who knew, who cared for, and loved Audrii," according to KENS 5.

Don Steven McDougal, a family friend and the last person believed to have been with the 5th-grade Livingston ISD student, is the primary person of interest in the case. Already in custody on an unrelated aggravated assault charge, McDougal will face a capital murder charge, informed District Attorney Shelly Bush-Sitton. The Trinity River Authority had to intervene to aid the search by lowering water levels, complicating efforts until "by the grace of God, one of those places of interest, we were able to locate Audrii," Lyons elaborated in a KENS 5 report.

An autopsy is pending to determine the actual cause of death while McDougal, who lived in a camper behind Audrii’s home, remains jailed on a $500,000 bond for the earlier charge. Despite the grim discovery, investigators continue their work, piecing together McDougal's potential involvement. McDougal admits to leaving his residence with Audrii on the morning of her disappearance, but has refrained from providing full cooperation during the probe, officers added.

Audrii Cunningham was described by her mother, Casey Matthews, as a "great child who was smart, fun, caring and had so many opportunities ahead of her," in a heart-wrenching interview with KENS 5. Matthews had previously pleaded for her daughter’s safe return, emphasizing, "She should be at home where we know she's safe, and she's warm, and she's fed, and she should be with her little brother." The community and Livingston ISD mourn the loss, facing the stark reality of the precious life cut short.

The investigation is ongoing, with the sheriff's office asking the public to review any possible footage taken on FM 3126 on the morning of Audrii's disappearance. A critical piece of evidence, the discovery of a backpack at Lake Livingston dam, was "a high probability that it's going to be Audrii's," Sheriff Lyons confirmed, as per Fox San Antonio. McDougal, who has a 2008 conviction for enticing a minor but was not required to register as a sex offender, remains a focal point for law enforcement as they build their case.
