On a recent patrol of Storrow Drive in Boston, a State Trooper discovered more than the aftermath of a one-car crash. Trooper Niko Retzos, while surveying the scene by the Hatch Shell, encountered Sean McGrady, 31, sitting in a heavily damaged Subaru, his behavior raising suspicion of intoxication and more. McGrady, a Windham, Maine resident, appeared more concerned with concealing the vehicle's floorboards than the collision itself.
According to a report from Massachusetts State Police News, McGrady’s movements inadvertently revealed an illegal handgun with an extended magazine only six inches away. The trooper, trained in Behavioral Observation and Suspicious Activity Recognition, had McGrady step out before seizing the firearm, which was found to be loaded with a round in the chamber and a 21-round magazine.
Further investigation of the Subaru's contents uncovered multiple containers of alcohol, and a stash of drugs including cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana, with weights totaling 21 grams and 53 grams respectively. McGrady, who lacked the proper licenses for carrying and possessing the firearm and ammunition, was arrested and later brought before the Charlestown District Court facing numerous charges related to drug trafficking, firearm possession, and operating a vehicle under influence.
Charges against McGrady included trafficking in cocaine, possession of a large capacity firearm without an FID, and a second offense of OUI Liquor. The full list of charges as noted by a Massachusetts State Police report highlighted the severity of the crimes, which also included open container violations and improper storage of a large capacity firearm. McGrady was submitted to sobriety tests and processed at the Boston Barracks, confirming a cocktail of lawlessness that began with a simple traffic incident.
