The Boston Police Department (BPD) hit a high note this month, combining fun and education to mark Black History Month. More than 200 local kids laced up their skates and hit the rink at Chez Vous Roller Skating while testing their knowledge against a series of trivia questions. The evening event, touted as the Black History Skate & Trivia Night, wasn't just a test of wits and wheels but also a community bonding experience.
High-spirited attendees joined BPD's Command Staff, Area B, and various community groups like the Bureau of Community Engagement and the Mattapan Teen Center. While some kids showed off their smarts, securing prizes for their correct answers, others hit the dance floor in a face-off that had everyone moving to the beat. According to a post on the official Boston Police Department website, the night was also filled with delights such as face painting and an array of food.
The BPD has a history of engaging with the community through events like these—intertwining leisure with learning. Supporters of the event included Boston Center for Youth & Families, Needham & Reading Metco, and Boston Public Schools, each one pitching in to create a welcoming atmosphere for the families in attendance. Together with creating fun memories, the event aimed to instill a sense of pride and knowledge about Black history among the younger generation. The Mattapan Patriots and Ilego of Boston also stood out among the groups contributing to the event's success.
