In a crackdown on drug trafficking in Boston's Mass and Cass area, law enforcement officers from District C-6 (South Boston) and B-2 (Roxbury) hit the streets, leading to two significant arrests. According to a Boston Police Department report, Jekis Aguavivas Mendes, 39, of Dorchester, and Waily Reyes, 26, of Jamaica Plain were taken into custody on January 30, 2024, after being caught in what appeared to be a street-level drug deal.
Officers were on a directed patrol when observing the suspects, Mendes was pulled over, uncovering a stash of narcotics including 19 bags of Fentanyl and 12 bags of crack-cocaine. During the investigation, and a whooping sum of $2180 in cash. Meanwhile, a traffic stop conducted on Reyes yielded 10 bags of Fentanyl, 7 bags of crack-cocaine, and $139. Both encounters underscored the persistent scourge of drugs haunting the city's neighborhoods.
Mendes is facing a litany of charges including Trafficking in Class A, Distribution of Class A and Class B, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B. Reyes, on the other arm, is looking at charges of Trafficking Class A and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B. The Roxbury District Court will serve as the venue for their arraignment.
These arrests throw a harsh light on the ongoing battle against drug trade in the Mass and Cass area, which has seen its fair share of narcotics-related crimes. The confiscated substances, particularly the Fentanyl, is of particular concern given the opioid epidemic’s chokehold on communities across the nation. Arrested in the operation, Mendes and Reyes are now at the heart of Boston’s determined effort to clean up its streets.
