Tragedy and honor met at Cesar Chavez High School as the community commemorated cheerleader Desiree Rivas, fatally shot in May 2023. Police are yet to apprehend any suspects in the case, despite a $12,000 reward for information. According to ABC15, the gym was adorned with pictures, balloons, and pink ribbons on senior night Friday, reflecting the love the student community held for Rivas.
Desiree's mother, Vanessa Gonzales, was quoted in an ABC15 interview touching on the senior night's significance, "This is a time that she should have been here." The cheer team at Cesar Chavez High paused to ensure Desiree was remembered. Junior cheerleader Leilani Arviso said, "She was more of a really strong leader," echoing the sentiments of the grieving team, who described Desiree as a person who "always put others first."
The remembrance was not without its profound pains. Although nearly a year has passed since her death, police told ABC15 that there are no updates in the case, leaving the family and community without closure. As senior night celebrated the accomplishments of students approaching their next chapter, the framed cheer jersey of Rivas was presented — a marker of a life that was, in the cruellest of ways, snuffed out prematurely.
Vanessa Gonzales is still looking for answers and justice for her daughter. She remarked to ABC15, "It's not only hard to move on without a child, but it's hard to know that the person that took your child away is not behind bars." The high school plans to hang Desiree's jersey in the gym as a permanent tribute to her memory, Gonzales said, "It's something that I can come back here and appreciate and know that this a place where she was loved."
Details of the fateful night were grim, recounting the moments that led to the passing of Desiree. As initially reported by ABC15, police were called to the scene near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road after midnight. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing other teens running from the area. The sound of gunfire, an aural specter, shattered the calm of the night, claiming Desiree's life as she left a house party. Long after the fatal encounter, the street bore the mute testimony of evidence markers, and residents like Renee expressed the communal heartache, remarking, "It's really sad. Especially, it's on Mother’s Day….And I'm a mother. Very disturbing."
In the ongoing search for answers, authorities and the family of Desiree Rivas maintain their plea for information that might lead to an arrest and bring some semblance of justice to this ongoing narrative of loss and remembrance. By keeping Desiree’s spirit alive within the walls of Cesar Chavez High through her framed jersey and collective memory, the community both mourns and honors the teenager whose life was tragically cut short.
