In a sobering breach of trust, a Chesterton, Indiana man has been collared for stealing north of $100,000 from an elderly Naperville resident. The perp, 43-year-old Zoran Tasevski, was netted following a thorough probe by Naperville Police which kicked off in October 2021 after a family member turned the spotlight on the ill deeds.
The accused served as a live-in aide, and rather than aiding, he is alleged to have exploited the victim, aged over 60, for monetary gain. According to a statement from the Naperville Police Department, the so-called aide's neglect led to an unpaid mortgage for nearly two years, the gas being shut off, and the victim hospital-bound with dehydration and pneumonia, while Tasevski allegedly pilfered funds and wrangled credit using the elderly individual's info since 2019.
Laying bare the sting of financial betrayal, police detail how Tasevski allegedly set himself up as an authorized user on a credit card using the victim's information. This saga of theft and deception was unveiled as the police, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service and Chesterton Police Department, cuffed the suspect on Jan. 23, 2024, and shuffled him off to DuPage County Jail this past Monday.
The charges are severe: one count of Aggravated Identity Theft, a Class X felony, and one count of Theft, a Class 1 felony. However, as Naperville Police reminded us, a charge does nothing more than drape the defendant in suspicion—Tasevski remains innocent in the eyes of the law unless proven guilty. Inevitably, the case serves as a harsh prompt for the public to maintain vigilance over those we entrust with our lives and livelihoods.
