Angel Martinez, a 23-year-old from Chicago, faces serious charges after his alleged involvement in two separate vehicular hijackings. The incidents, which took place in December last year, resulted in Martinez being slapped with two felony counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, and another felony count for recklessly discharging a firearm, law enforcement officials detailed.
According to Chicago Police, Martinez was apprehended on February 6, 2024, in the same neighborhood where, they allege, he endangered the community with gunfire on New Year's Eve. On December 20, he reportedly forced a 19-year-old male to surrender his vehicle at gunpoint in what police describe as a brazen crime on the 8300 block of S. Buffalo. Just two days later, a 48-year-old food delivery driver became his next victim in a similar hijacking in the 8400 block of S. Brandon.
The young man from the 10400 block of S. Ewing now awaits a detention hearing scheduled on today's date at the courthouse on 2600 S. California. His swift arrest follows a chain of violent episodes that put residents on high alert and the Chicago Police Department in a relentless manhunt for the culprits.
Martinez's alleged reckless act of firing a gun, on December 31, has particularly stunned the neighborhood, raising concerns about public safety amid the holiday celebrations. The Chicago Police report indicates that the incident took place, in the 10300 block of S. Avenue L, where thankfully no one was reported injured. As police continue their investigation, no additional information has been released at this time.
