A spate of armed robberies in Chicago's 9th District has police on alert and community members on edge following a series of thefts that have occurred throughout January and February. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert after identifying a pattern in these crimes, with a suspect who is believed to have targeted citizens and businesses in the Deering area.
The robberies have taken place at various times and locations, including the 4700 Block of South Loomis Boulevard and the 4800 Block of South Throop Street with two incidents reported on January 12, one at 8:52 P.M., and the other shortly after, at 9:00 P.M. Subsequent robberies were reported on January 18 and 27, on February 1, and 9, with the most recent incidents occurring on the 2000 Block of West 47th Street on February 11, at 6:00 P.M and again just 5 minutes later. According to a community alert published on February 16th, the perpetrator is described as an African American male in his 20s or 30s, brandishing a distinct two-tone handgun. No getaway vehicle has been reported in connection with the crimes.
In response to the incidents, the police have circulated a video of the suspect and are urging locals to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious behavior immediately. The department has provided safety recommendations, emphasizing the importance of being aware of one's surroundings and not pursuing a fleeing suspect. Instead, witnesses are encouraged to focus on recalling unique physical characteristics and to share any relevant video surveillance footage with investigating detectives.
The Chicago Police have not indicated any arrests at this point and are asking anyone with information to come forward. The department advised, "If approached by a witness to the incident, request their contact information" and to "Immediately dial 9-1-1 and remain on the scene when possible." As authorities go about piecing together the details of the case, their main priority remains the safety and the reassurance of the concerned citizens caught in the midst of this alarming series of crimes.
