Residents of Chicago's 2nd District are on high alert after a string of armed robberies has plagued the community. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert to Wentworth citizens, warning them of the recent spike in violent thefts. According to the CPD's alert, the incidents involved one to two male offenders who approached victims at gunpoint and demanded their belongings before fleeing on foot.
The robberies occurred in several locations, including the 5400 block of South State St. on February 3 at 7:30 P.M., the 4800 block of South Michigan Ave. on February 6 at 1:30 A.M., the 5400 block of South Wentworth Ave. on February 8 at 12:50 P.M., and the 100 block of east 51st St. on February 18 at 9:00 P.M. These brazen acts of crime have left the community shaken, and CPD has released descriptions of the suspects. The first is detailed as an African-American male, aged 20-25, roughly 5'10″ to 5'11″ in height, and weighing around 160 lbs, the second offender's details are less specific, yet he is thought to be around the same age and stands at 5'07″.
In response to the distressing pattern of robberies, the police have offered safety tips to the public. "Always be aware of your surroundings," the department advises, and "report suspicious activity immediately." Citizens are also urged to stay calm if confronted and to make a mental note of any distinguishing features of their assailant. Importantly, they should "never pursue a fleeing assailant," but should instead focus on providing detailed information to law enforcement.
The CPD is actively seeking further information from the public that could lead to the apprehension of the individuals responsible. They've emphasized the importance of dialing 9-1-1 immediately after experiencing or witnessing a crime and if approached by a witness, to request contact information.
