Chicago retailers on high alert: In a series of brazen heists, a solo bandit has been wreaking havoc across prime shopping districts, striking fear and frustration in local business owners. With a spree of robberies and retail thefts reported, businesses in the 1st and 18th Districts are urged to tighten security and watch for suspicious activity, according to a business alert issued by Chicago Police.
Savvy shoplifters are nothing new to the city, but the suspect in question has taken theft to another level, targeting stores, grabbing merchandise, and when confronted, he's not afraid to get rough to ensure his escape; these incidents occurred during the business hours with numerous instances reported on the 100 block of N. State St., where retailers are experiencing the brunt of the offensive.
The department store desperado is described as an African-American male in his 40s, standing around 5'8" to 5'10", weighing between 185 to 210 pounds. He’s been bold, but he’s not invisible, and authorities are asking the public and businesses to be vigilant—anyone with information or who witnesses suspicious behavior is strongly encouraged to report it by calling 911.
Shop owners aren't just sitting ducks; they're advised to alert neighboring businesses, keep an eye out for any loitering individuals or vehicles, and install working surveillance systems, which could make all the difference when the thief decides to strike again. Calling 911 might seem like stating the obvious, yet in the anxious moments of witnessing a crime, it’s a critical step towards apprehending the culprit who has hit multiple locations along N. Michigan Ave. and N. State St. in just a matter of weeks.
