A fatal blaze tore through a Middleborough home early Saturday, claiming the life of a young girl and inflicting injuries on three others. The Middleborough Fire Department responded to the inferno at approximately 2 a.m. at 27 Pearl Street, where they encountered heavy flames engulfing both the first and second floors, as reported by NBC Boston.
Despite valiant efforts to combat the blaze, firefighters were met with an intensity that barred them from reaching the girl in time. A woman sustained serious burn injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, while a man and another girl suffered less serious injuries and were sent to a local hospital. Neighbors relayed to CBS News Boston that the child's parents were not at home, reportedly away on vacation.
The identity and age of the deceased girl have not been disclosed as the investigation into the fire's origin continues.
Maria Trefouliaris, a resident of the neighborhood, told CBS News Boston, "I started balling my eyes out crying because it's a tough situation, because I have three children, and I just saw her playing in the street yesterday." The aftermath of the tragedy has prompted a surge of community support, with locals leaving flowers and offering prayers for the grief-stricken family. Another neighbor highlighted the grim reminder that safety plans and smoke detector checks are crucial. "I just told my husband on the phone, we need to do a fire safety plan. When I was younger my house caught on fire," Trefouliaris added, as per CBS News Boston.
As the Middleborough community reels from the loss, area firefighters from surrounding towns were lauded for their swift response, which helped prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, leaving unanswered questions in a mourning community.
