Mourners are set to gather to pay their final respects to slain 22-year-old nursing student, Laken Hope Riley, whose life was tragically cut short on the University of Georgia campus. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a visitation is scheduled for March 1 from noon to 2 p.m at Woodstock City Church, followed by a funeral service at the same location. The Poole Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Woodstock is handling the arrangements.
Riley, a transfer student from UGA to the Augusta University nursing program in Athens, was remembered in her obituary as "an amazing daughter, sister, friend and overall person in general," with a deep love for the Lord that was "exemplified in every aspect of her life." As reported by Atlanta News First, the family is foregoing flowers, instead asking for donations to an online fundraiser to help with funeral expenses, establish a scholarship in Riley's name, and to raise homicide awareness.
The Woodstock community and Riley's church are grappling with grief in the wake of the devastating news. Samer Massad, the lead pastor of Woodstock City Church, said in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First, "We are devastated by the news of the tragic death of Laken Riley. Laken's family are active members of our church community. Our prayers are with them, as is our support to walk alongside them through this difficult time."
The suspect in Riley's murder, José Antonio Ibarra, 26, faces a slew of charges, including murder and kidnapping. According to reports, Ibarra is not a U.S. citizen and it is believed he did not know Riley. A judge denied Ibarra bail on Saturday, referring the matter to a higher court, details an article from Atlanta News First. His brother, Diego Ibarra, has also been arrested in relation to the possession of a fake green card.
Riley's untimely death has ignited conversations and concerns, with a GoFundMe account established not only to support the family but also to promote "homicide awareness". As the community prepares to bid farewell to the young student whose promise was so cruelly extinguished, the quest for justice continues, with the suspect's immigration status now drawing scrutiny from state officials.
